Normally it is virtual network interface(/dev/vmnet) when we use VMware. At least it was in my experience. On Mac OS X(Leopard) it is on the network interface list but isn't a device.
If it is need to capture network traffics between a VMware guest and Mac OS X, use vmnet-sniffer which is in /Library/Application Support/VMware Fusion/. It helps use to make a file included network traffics.
Now we can analyze network traffics using our favorite packet capture tool such as Wireshark or tcpdump.
